Sabbatical Day 1

I slept in until 9:40 . . . probably the latest I’ve stayed in bed this year.  Cynthia likes to go to bed before 11, and she gets mad if I stay up, so this means I end up getting like 8-9 hours of sleep every night.  This is great, but it means I’m usually up by 8am even on weekends.  I thought I couldn’t sleep in anymore because I was getting old, I guess all it takes is staying up till 1am tweaking wordpress minutia.

I drove over to American Fly fishing to pick up some last minute supplies for my upcoming trip – a new DT-4-F fly line (ah, technical obscurity).  My old floating line was 5 or 6 weight (I don’t even know, since my Grandpa rigged it up), and I think it was overpowering my 4wt rod.  I figure if I’m going to be fishing for 4 days when I’ll be truly dialing in my fly cast, I might as well do so with well matched equipment.  I also picked up some leaders and split shot . . . it should be everything I need except for flies, which I’ll buy in Baldwin on expert recommendation.

I pulled the old mystery line off and put the new one onto my reel spool, which took forever – I had to do a weird fly line to fly line connection since the old rig didn’t have backing, just some old heavy weight line , ended up going with a loop to loop connection after trying blood and nail knots which wouldn’t come together right and/or wouldn’t hold.

We had invited about 40 people over to come hang out in the pool, but as it worked out most people had other plans or where out of town so only 8 or so made it (People like us and we usually get at least 3 times as many.  Honest.  Or maybe we’ve suddenly become annoying and un-fun, but I doubt it).  This was fine, and just the way it should have been – a laid back afternoon in the pool, with left over burgers on the grill from Pat the brother-in-law’s graduation party which gets us ever closer to the requisite empty fridge.  Now I’m sitting on the couch – Charrl convinced me to order the UFC fight ($54.95!), so we’ll be enjoying that.

All and all, a good start for day one.  I still don’t think it’s fully sunk in – I rationally know I don’t have to go back to work on Monday, but it doesn’t feel as different as I think it should yet.  I still feel a bit of underlying stress.  Others have told me that it takes a few days for this to go away, we shall see.
